A gastroenterologist trained at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota is now using endoscopic ultrasound technology at York Central Hospital, in Richmond Hill, Ont., to more accurately diagnose lesions found in the GI (Gastrointestinal) tracts of patients.
The procedure involves, a small ultrasound transducer being installed on the tip of an endoscope. An endoscope is a small, lighted, flexible tube with a camera attached. By inserting the endoscope and camera into the upper or the lower digestive tract, the doctor is able to obtain high-quality ultrasound images of organs. The images obtained with EUS are often more accurate and detailed than images provided by traditional ultrasound.
The technology also enables the physician to see how far cancers have developed, and to determine the best path to recovery for patients. It is said to be an excellent way of identifying cancers and other illnesses – quickly, accurately, and in a non-invasive manner.
York Central Hospital is one of the first facilities in Canada to employ the technology. It will most likely become a standard practice across the country as word of its effectiveness spreads.
The ultrasound device not only creates images of structures on the surface of the GI tract, but also identifies problems in the walls of the stomach, duodenum and intestines. Generally, it can be used to image nearby structures, such as major blood vessels, the pancreas, liver, gallbladder and lymph nodes.

“Endoscopic ultrasound can tell us what type of lesions we’re dealing with, even if they are submucosal (beneath the surface layer),” said Dr. Nijhawan. He emphasized that endoscopic ultrasound is most useful for patients who have had a regular endoscopy, during which a lesion was found. An EUS can help the specialist determine the nature of the mass without the need for exploratory surgery. In each of these cases, the images will appear differently on the computer screen, which the physician watches as he or she performs the procedure. “It’s a matter of pattern recognition,” noted Dr.
Nijhawan.
The technology is also extremely useful for cancer staging. For example, in cases of advanced esophageal cancer, removal of a large part of the esophagus could be more traumatic to the patient than foregoing the surgery and allowing the person to live out his remaining days, months or years with the ability to eat and drink relatively normally.
Dr. Nijhawan predicts that enhancements to EUS technology will appear in the near future, such as narrower catheters, making it easier for the patient to swallow and reducing the risk of tearing the GI tract. As well, he considers developments in the area of fine needle aspirants – the devices that allow physicians to take tissue biopsies while they are conducting the endoscopic ultrasound. It's an efficient and reliable method of determining what’s going on inside the GI tract, and it makes an accurate diagnosis.

Technology is amazing. It's great that it's so advanced now, that if we were ever to have cancer or so, we would know that there's hope of recovering. Also, technology, as you have wrote about above, show that it can help us detect early signs, and that'll help us prevent illness. In a few decades, technology would be so advanced that...it's actually kind of scary! The fact that now, they have robot surgeons, that's unbelievable! But technology does do the job, keeping us up to date on ourselves, and helping us!
ReplyDeleteThe technology is so great which in deed reduce the Mortality rate all over the world. which they give a firm helping hand, the gastroenterology, the study of the digestive system and its disorders with the aid of endoscope, most of the disorder in the alimentary canal could be solved, even the cancer some how the diagnostics we have with the hardware support, we in future may have a longer life spin with the aid of technology, yet we have to note that
ReplyDelete" Mordern technology

a lovely quote rings our bell
we should use the technology wisely or else we will probably reap as we had sown
it amazes mehow they never stop developing new ways to make surgery and illness prevention more effective, and also less risky and painful. This particular innovation is important because, as much as we need to find cures, prevention is one of the best things we can do. Knowing what is wrong with a patient in the early stages, and exactly what needs to be done about it can save countless more lives.
ReplyDeleteMedical technology never fails to amuse me. Endoscopes are very useful, like you stated, for identifying diseases and cancers right from the get go. This technology is great and it goes to show that sometimes technology is not at all bad. In fact, a handful lives have been saved because of them. With these endoscopes, accurate diagnosis could be made and doctors could quickly find a way to cure it before getting any worse. Great stuff!
ReplyDeleteHey Claudia,
ReplyDeleteInteresting blog! It makes me happy knowing that there's always a technology that can always help us when we are in need of recovery. Technology like these are always useful for those who have cancers, diseases and other sickness. Thus, sometimes we can't always depend on technology because it can also go wrong. People are most likely to use technology but others don't. Technological advances includes fixing the consequences of our actions, instead of the problem. In fact, we need to be more focused on living healthy lives, whether that is through proper diet or active lifestyles. We can't depend on technology to fix all of our problems, especially since it was one of the causes of our current situation!
hey Claudia
ReplyDeleteThe Endoscopic ultrasound seems like a very interesting piece of technology. I like how its extremely useful for cancer staging, it also makes the removal of a large part of the esophagus less invasive thus allowing the patients to have a shorter recovery period. Technology is great and we rely on it greatly, how could we not everything around us runs on technology, yet we cant forget that technology can be damgerous if we misuse it. very good blog it was enjoyable to read :)
I couldn't believe the fact that medical technology seems to evolve at faster and faster rates. Its as if the human mind is evolving over the years! Cancer is a disease which is seen much to often, and so I am glad that the new procedures at York Central Hospital are finding new ways to help. I liked the fact that endoscopic ultrasounds are used to alleviate unnecessary pain and suffering from patients. This new technology gives us more information about the problem, which is the bottom line. With more information, we can gain new insights, and maybe even new cures.
ReplyDeleteGreat job:)
I find endoscopes to be a very useful instrument in surgery. Surgeons can sometimes use endoscopes instead of making a big incision to perform surgery. The endoscope gives doctor a very accurate image of the internal body. Alongside with surgeries, the endoscope can be used to do research of the internal body organ systems, such as the circulatory system. The endoscope is used to monitor the staging of cancers in the lung, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, and rectum. In addition, it helps scientists study bile duct abnormalities, and muscles of the lower rectum and anal cavity. I found your blog very interesting, and I learned a lot. Good job Claudia!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that endoscopes are a Canadian invention! It is amazing what new technologies there are these days and just what they can do. A procedure that would normally be such an invasive and painful surgery for the patient just to learn what might be wrong with them, can now be done so quick and effectively with minimum pain. Endoscopes are a good idea to help learn about any possible cancer's and diseases found in the digestive tract. They help doctor's learn more about our body, and about the digestive tract.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog. It is so good to know that technology these days are not only helping people with pain, but saving lives.
This advance in endosopic ultrasound is amazing! By learning more about the characteristics of a disease and/or an affected organ, doctors and scientists have a lot more information to help them with the patient's recovery plans. The ultrasound also works fast, giving more time for the patients to recover. It is always better to catch the illness or disease a early as possible, and endoscopic ultrasound can help with that. I agree with Dr. Nijhawan's prediction. I think EUS technology will appear in the near future also. The development and use of endoscopic ultrasound may just be the start, and they will be many more discoveries and improvements in EUS technology to come.
ReplyDeleteThis new technology that involves a small ultrasound transducer being installed on the tip of an endoscope with a camera attached to it? That is such a great idea!! Instead of just having an ultrasound of MRI, you can have a high-quality ultrasound image of just the organ that you want. Not only do you have complete detail of what you are looking for, but now physicians are able to see how far cancers have been developed and can now give more feedback to the patient on the recovery time and how much the cancer has spread. This technology is also extremely useful for cancer staging. This new technology is surely going to help many patients and detect certain abnormalities that people have.
ReplyDeleteThis invention is very interesting. I've heard about medical cameras that would allow us to visualize our system internally, but I haven't looked into the subject in-depth. Allowing us to stage the process of cancer before it can successfully develop is extremely useful and beneficial for our cause seeing the damage that cancer would create. I am really for this invention, except I would not want to be awake for when the camera would enter my system. Nevertheless, this is a very informative and great post.
ReplyDeleteHey hey hey
ReplyDeleteIt's really good to know that there are technologies that can detect cancers. I've never heard of endoscopic ultrasound technology before, so it was interesting to learn about it. Cancer is a big thing and the technology for diagnosing and treating this sickness is getting better and better. I found it very informative to know that the endoscopic ultrasound creates images of structures on the surface of the GI tract and identifies problems in the walls of the stomach, duodenum and intestines. I feel this information is useful to doctors so that they can find a way to create healthy living in individuals.
Excellent blog Claudia! I really enjoy reading your blogs because they are always so well written and organized. The invention that you discussed, the advance in endoscopic ultrasound, is very interesting. It is an excellent example of how useful technology in health care really is. These intrsuments not only can assist in surgery procedures but they can also help detect things like cancer in its early stages. Furthermore, your blog was so good because it was able to provide a lot of information and make sense at the same time; it was easy to follow. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteThe endoscopic ultrasound technology you mentioned above is a great contribution to the improvement of medical technology. It sounds extremely useful and a lot more accurate than other scans. Expanding on this, scientists have actually now developed something called a Capsule Endoscopy. It essentially provides the same purpose, to examine the gastrointestinal tract, but it is far more convenient. Instead of inserting a tube, one can easily just swallow this pill-sized looking endoscopy. Attached, is a video camera lens and a light source which produces images onto an external monitor. Overall, great and enjoyable blog! :D
ReplyDeleteHi Claudia! I enjoyed reading your blog. It was extremely interesting and informative. I agree that technology has played a tremendously important role in our society. The technological advancements that we have been blessed with have improved our lives greatly. We rely on technology for numerous reasons, one of them being the health issues that we are faced with in our everyday lives, whether it be a small fever or some sort of cancer, technology has allowed us access to ways of prevention and appropriate treatment. At the same time, new advancements have given us the ability to receive the treatment necessary while attempting to reduce the pain patients have to undergo. I really liked how your blog is based on the Canadian contribution to the medical field. It is true that these technological developments will have a great impact for the future of not only Canadians, but of our society as a whole. Great job Claudia!
ReplyDeleteI have learned a lot about the endoscopic ultrasound technology from your blog and how it works. I find it to be very interesting. Also, its good to know that a Canadian, not far from where we are is developing this technology. His new developments sound extremely useful. I enjoyed reading your blog and have definitely learned a lot.
